January 2022 Membership Meeting Minutes

1/13/2022 Meeting Minutes

  • 35 Members attended this month’s meeting, held outdoors at Colony Rec Center.
  • Trish opened the meeting with introductions of the 2022 board members.
    • John Campbell and Trish Chandler – co-presidents
    • John Valasco – vice president
    • Mark Rossini – treasurer
    • Mary Lou Marcotte – secretary
    • Lizann Atkin – president emeritus
  • We celebrated our 1st place team award for the Running of the Squares Race at Lake Sumter Landing.  Congratulations to all our runners!
  • Mark provided an update of our 2021 financials.  We ended the year with a small net gain of about $85, as most of our income from dues and apparel sales was spent on running club events and purchases.  The board will be working on a budget and spending plan for 2022 and this will be reported at our next meeting.
  • John V discussed out plans for our next Home Run, to be held at Trillium Rec Center near Brownwood.  NOTE:  Due to safety concerns from bad weather, this event has been POSTPONED until a later date.  More to come….
  • John V also reminded all runners to work on improving our safety while running.  Runners should run against traffic, double file AT MOST, and call out to your group when you see a cart or vehicle coming at you.  Move into a single file when a cart or vehicle approaches.  Tunnels are an exception to this, when it may be safer to exit the tunnel on the right side (with traffic), so that an oncoming cart is not surprised.
  • John C spoke of our upcoming races for 2022.  He would like everyone to send him info about all our planned races, so that he may put them on our club calendar.  Always enter team name TVRC when registering for a race, as the race directors notice our club involvement.  In addition, we would like to plan a few ‘destination’ or ‘featured’ races for each year, in advance, so that all members know and can plan for these events.  More to come on this topic.
  • Superbowl – John C will be organizing a super bowl pool, $5 a spot.
  • We will hold our annual ‘Prediction Run’ on March 15.  Distance will be 6 miles, and no watches or tracking devices may be worn. Runners will predict their time to complete the 6 mile distance. Prizes will be given for the closest to prediction and farthest from prediction.
  • Mary Lou spoke about our upcoming speaker planned for our March meeting.  Deborah Waddell from The Villages Lifelong Learning Center will speak on the Power of Foods for Life Extension.  Deborah teaches how the power of plant based foods can prolong our life and can prevent or reverse may age related diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
  • Future speaker ideas were discussed… Some ideas include the Stretch Zone, Dealing with Race Related Anxiety, How to get more out of your Garmin device, and Dr. Vincent from University of Florida Running Medicine Clinic (shoe clinic).
  • Trish talked about meeting Hank from the Iron meets Iron running group that runs from the village of Bradford.  Also, we discussed the Marion County run club, who runs in Ocala.  We have a few TVRC members that belong to these groups, and we would like to foster the relationship and establish some crossover events.
  • Rudy has some ideas about including push notifications or setting up a weekly email to all club members.  The intent would be to have better communication of upcoming events or training runs, and any last minute updates.
  • Sue Bonzey spoke to the group about a trip she is planning for April 2023.  She will be doing a Bike and Barge trip in Holland and invites people to join her.  She will post more information about the cost of the trip (around $1800 plus airfare and insurance) and how to register.  The barge can hold 24 people, and she has 7 tentatively interested so far.
  • Dianne S is planning a beginner level pickleball event to be held on Friday February 4 at Lake Miona Rec Center.  Everyone is welcome to attend, 4-5:50, including spouses and significant others.
