Runner Bio – April 2024 Meeting

Greg Houston Running Bio

I began running in 1963. Readers Digest had an article about how dramatically your fitness could improve by running. In 8th grade I got as far as the county track meet in the 3X‹mile. Serious running began at 18 as I prepared for college and the military. I ran for the next 25 years. After a nearly a 25 year break from running I retired to the Villages in 2020. I only joined the Track Club because of Covid. I had never even dreamed of running as a senior. They coached me up, and Arlene kept insisting I join the Running Club! As I was able to run longer I searched for a unique challenge and found it with Ultras. The journey from Sitting on my couch to running a 50K took three years, with lots of Shack and back runs! I’ve run 10 marathons, 9 UItra’s, 7 5K’s and 1OK’s each, and several half Marathons. Probably my favorite race was the New York City marathon. I prefer training runs to racing which explains why I have raced so few. My lifetime mileage is 22,000 miles. I run for the joy of it!
