Running Safely

Group Run Best Practices:

  • Always run into on-coming traffic (same as walkers…with tunnels being an exception)
  • Run to the leftmost position in the lane
  • Never run more than 2 abreast (exception: passing, and only if clear)
  • If a sidewalk is available, use it over a multi-modal lane (giving walkers right-of-way)
  • On split pathways, squeeze to single file if a golf car approaches
  • On blind entries to tunnels, always enter SLOWLY to assure a cart/bike is not exiting. If possible, cross sides to go WITH traffic mid-way. If there is a blind exit, continue WITH traffic until past the blind area
  • Avoid crossing streets except at crosswalks
  • Use hand signals when turning or changing from sidewalk to pathway
  • When the sun is behind you be aware that golf car drivers can easily be blinded by the sun….give them the benefit of the doubt
  • Carry ID

Running more than 2 abreast and splitting sides are probably the most irritating situations for an approaching bike or golf car. A runner’s goal is to be as predictable as possible.
